2. What methods of payment will you accept?
At present we use Pay Pal's secure online payment service and will also take cash, postal orders or cheques, made payable to Scotland by Camper Ltd. Cheques must be presented in advance and will not be accepted on the day of hire. Cash/Postal Orders will be accepted on the day of hire.
3. How many people will the Camper sleep?
The vans will sleep 2 adults and 2 children. They can carry up to 4 adults and each seat has its own seatbelt. If you require extra sleeping space we can provide tents for a small charge.
4. What type of insurance cover is it and how old do I have to be?
Each hire includes fully comprehensive insurance for 1 named driver. Each driver must be aged between the ages of 25 and 70 (please see terms and conditions for more details).
5. When can I get the Van and when do I have to bring it back?
During peak time we can only accept bookings for full weeks only. The vehicle can be collected before 10am or after 2pm on Saturday and must be returned by 7pm the following Friday. This is to ensure that we have enough time to turn the van around for the next booking.
6. What do I need to bring on the day?
Each driver must bring a valid Passport and a full driving licence (including the paper part if you have a new licence). Also you will need to provide your bedding as this is not included in the hire. We recommend sleeping bags for the bunks. If you cannot provide these then they are available at an additional charge provided they are booked in advance.
7. Where can I go?
Anywhere you want! Travel other than the UK mainland is not permitted without prior consent. However there are more than enough beautiful and varied places in Scotland and we suggest you try to enjoy these as much as possible like we have done. There are no mileage charges but we would hope that you would respect the feelings of the vehicles and don't push them to the limit.
8. Where can I camp?
Almost anywhere. Please respect peoples privacy and land when choosing spots to pitch, but there are more than enough fantastic areas to choose from. Please abide by the country code and remove all litter, leaving the area as lovely as you found it ready for the next adventurer. Campsites are also good with excellent facilities. We have provided some information on these with the van.
9. What type of Camper are they?
All our vans are fully restored Type 2 VW Campervans, born between 1965 and 1973. They are tax exempt historic vehicles and have their own individual character.
10. How fast do they go?
These are not fast machines, but are more designed for ambling along at a comfortable 50mph. Who needs to go fast when you are admiring the beauty the countryside has to offer?!
11. What are they like on Fuel Consumption?
This depends on the speed you are going but can be quite thirsty compared to modern cars of today. However they love to cruise and will happily do around 8 miles to the pound!
12. Does it come with a full tank of petrol?
Yes it does, and should be returned with a full tank at the end of hire.
13. What happens if the vehicle breaks down?
All vehicles are regularly serviced by a specialist VW mechanic, but in this unlikely and extremely unfortunate occurrence then the vehicles are covered by AA relay support where they will take you to the nearest garage and we will arranged repairs if the AA can't fix it. Each van is also equipped with jump leads as it's easy to forget and overuse the power when parked up. Instructions are provided within the van and there is a 24-hour answerphone that you can always use to get in contact with us if necessary.
14. What comes with the van?
All cooking and cleaning utensils. A twin hob gas cooker and grill. A sink or washing up bowl with pumped water and also a cool box. Tables and chairs for alfresco dining are also included.
15. What's the heating like?
We have fitted Propane gas heaters to the inside of the van, which safely vent under the vehicle. These are extremely efficient but would only really be required on winter breaks.
16. What are they like to drive?
Please remember these vans are around 30 Years old and have been round the clock. They have been professionally maintained, but are still very old and should be treated with the respect that they deserve. They do not have power assisted steering, but are none the less extremely enjoyable and fun to drive and after an hour or so you will be an expert driver!
17. Do they have Stereos?
But of course! Each van has a CD player so don't forget your favourite CD collection!
18. Do I need to pay a security deposit on the Collection day?
Yes. This is to cover any damage caused to the van or its contents whilst in your hands. We require a £150 cash deposit on the day of hire. Cheques will not be accepted unless received 7 days in advance.
19. What happens if I want to cancel?
If you are unfortunate enough not to be able to make the exciting holiday you have booked, then we will arrange a partial refund if we are notified 21 days prior to the date of actual hire. If we are notified within the 21 days then the payment you made on booking is unfortunately non refundable. In all cases the deposit is non-refundable.
20. What happens if I bring my own car?
No problem! We shall look after your car for you in a safe location. We are not responsible however for the security of your vehicle whilst you are away, but will do our best to ensure no harm comes to it.
21. What happens if I come by train or plane?
We will agree in advance a convenient meeting point to complete contracts.
22. What's the weather like?
Well we are not quite in the tropics and the weather can be very varied however we have enjoyed many a holiday with rain, snow and glorious sunshine - just depends on the luck of the day! We must point out that there is no place like Scotland when the weather's right, it's paradise undiscovered by many! If you want guaranteed sunshine then go to the crowded beaches abroad, however you could be missing many gorgeous days on an empty Scottish beach.
23. Who else can drive the Camper?
Each Camper is insured for the one named driver only, but if you require additional drivers, then these are available through the insurance company at an additional cost. Please contact us for further details.
